A British holidaymaker has ignited a fierce online debate after detailing the unconventional revenge he took on a couple he accused of stealing his sun loungers at a Caribbean resort.
The Sunbed Dispute Unfolds
The man explained on Reddit that he and his wife were enjoying a well-deserved holiday in the Caribbean, funded by months of saving. For most of their week-long stay, they used the same two sunbeds without issue, as the resort was not particularly crowded.
The situation changed when another couple arrived a few days before their departure. The original holidaymaker's wife noticed the newcomers "looking at us a few times over a couple of days." On their final morning, they discovered the couple's belongings spread across their usual loungers.
The man stated he wouldn't have minded if the pair were actively using the beds, but claimed they "didn't show up until noon." His suspicions were confirmed when his wife, while in the water, saw the couple walk past him in their new, less desirable spot and start laughing.
A Lesson in Sunbed Etiquette
With their flight home scheduled for the next day, the man decided to teach the other couple a lesson they wouldn't forget. "We went down very early, spread fresh towels on the loungers, put fresh folded towels down, and left our leftover suntan lotion and our inflatable floats on the loungers," he recounted.
His plan was simple: "Hope they spent all day waiting to see who stole their spot." This act of petty revenge, however, did not receive universal approval and opened a broader discussion about resort behaviour.
Divided Public Opinion
The online community was split. While some applauded his creative retaliation, others condemned him for what they perceived as an equally entitled attitude.
One critical commenter questioned the core premise: "I don't get it... you thought the loungers belonged to you for the whole week?" Another contributor supported a common resort policy, stating, "Every resort and cruise ship needs to adopt the policy of not saving seats."
They elaborated that leaving belongings for a short dip is acceptable, but reserving a spot all day is unreasonable. A third user remarked bluntly, "People who think they own a spot at a hotel are the worst."
Another pointed out the practicalities and the aftermath of the revenge: "They were the hotels loungers - for the hotels guests. First come, first served... Then you intentionally left a bunch of junk and littered the place up. And now you're bragging about it."
The incident highlights the ongoing and often unspoken conflict over sunbed etiquette at holiday resorts, proving that there are at least two sides to every holiday dispute.
