The Kent & East Sussex Railway, a heritage line just 90 minutes from London, has unveiled a packed programme of autumn attractions, including magical train rides, Halloween events, and behind-the-scenes tours. The award-winning railway, based in Tenterden, was recently named Best Family Experience in Kent in the 2026 Muddy Stilettos Awards for the second consecutive year.
Spellbound Express for Young Families
During October half-term, the railway will host two Halloween-themed events. The Spellbound Express, running on Wednesday, October 28, Thursday, October 29, and Friday, October 30, offers young visitors the chance to meet characters including Wendy the Wicked Witch, watch Merlin perform magic tricks, and encounter a friendly baby dragon aboard vintage train carriages. Aimed at children aged four to 11, the experience includes a magical activity pack and a Junior Spellcaster certificate to take home.
Fright Night Express Returns with Fireworks
For families seeking more thrills, the Fright Night Express returns on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31. Passengers can enjoy spooky entertainment at the station before boarding the train through the darkening Wealden countryside. The event includes drumming performances, a fire-eater, themed treats for children, and a fireworks display at Northiam Station, weather permitting. While particularly popular with families with children aged six to 11, organisers say the experience is suitable for visitors of all ages.
Behind the Scenes Experience
Away from the Halloween celebrations, the railway is also opening its doors to visitors wanting a closer look at the work that keeps the historic line running. The Behind the Scenes Experience, available on selected dates throughout September and October, offers guests a full-day guided tour of areas normally closed to the public. Visitors can explore the Carriage and Wagon Workshop in Tenterden, visit the Locomotive Works at Rolvenden, and spend time inside a traditional signal box while meeting some of the volunteers who help operate the railway. The experience also includes a return journey along the full 10½-mile line and lunch in the railway's Refreshment Rooms.
