Jet2 Introduces Affordable Flights to the Historic Island of Lesvos

Jet2 has unveiled a new flight route from London Gatwick to Mytilene, the capital of the Greek island Lesvos, often celebrated as an 'unspoiled' destination. The inaugural flight is scheduled for May 2, 2027, with seasonal operations running through October 10, 2027. This expansion is part of Jet2's broader strategy to increase its presence in Greece, offering over 1.1 million seats across 35 destinations.

Pricing and Seasonal Availability

The most economical flights are available in October, priced at £97 for a one-way ticket. During the peak summer months, fares rise, with the cheapest one-way flight in August costing £153. Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2 and Jet2holidays, emphasized the strong customer demand, stating, 'The reaction from customers and independent travel has been incredible, showing just how much demand there is.'

Exploring Mytilene and Lesvos

Lesvos, the third largest island in Greece, is renowned for its rich history and cultural attractions. Key highlights include:

  • Mytilene Castle: A 60-acre medieval fortress, one of the best-preserved examples in the Mediterranean.
  • Archaeological Museum: Features exhibitions of ceramics, sculptures, and coins, located near the castle.
  • Ouzo Production: Lesvos is a major producer of ouzo, Greece's national spirit, with over 15 local producers and two holding Protected Origin status.
  • Greek Coffee Culture: Experience traditional Greek coffee, often stronger and prepared in a 'briki' pot, with 'Metrio' being a popular variant served with one teaspoon of sugar.
  • Culinary Delights: Local eateries like Kafeneion O Ermis and Kioupia Ladadika offer mezze, ouzo varieties, and dishes such as squid and grilled aubergine.
  • Petrified Forest: A natural wonder formed around 20 million years ago from volcanic activity.

LGBTQ+ Heritage and Tourism

Lesvos holds significant LGBTQ+ historical importance, as the terms 'lesbian' and 'sapphic' originate from Sappho of Lesbos, an ancient poet born around 630 BCE. Her birthplace, Eressos, attracts thousands of visitors annually to landmarks like Sappho's Rock. Dr. Hannah Roche, a senior lecturer, noted, 'Sappho shows us that women who love women have always been here, and she reminds us of the pleasures, passions, and poetic achievements of the queer past.'

Best Time to Visit

Summer is ideal for warm weather, with average temperatures around 30°C, while October offers milder conditions between 21°C and 25°C. Jet2's expansion includes additional routes from UK airports like Birmingham, Leeds Bradford, London Stansted, and Manchester to various Greek destinations in summer 2026.
