Sutton power cut: homes lose electricity after underground fault

A power cut struck a South London neighbourhood this morning after faulty underground electrical equipment caused smoke to billow from a manhole cover. Engineers are now working to restore supplies.

Incident details

Smoke was seen near the junction of York Road and Worcester Road in Sutton, with the London Fire Brigade confirming it arrived before 7am on Tuesday, June 23. Firefighters from Sutton Fire Station responded to reports of smoke issuing from a manhole cover at 0642 and remained on scene until 0716, when the incident was handed over to UK Power Networks.

Engineers on site

UK Power Networks took over the site shortly after and identified a fault in underground equipment. Engineers are now carrying out repairs. A spokesperson for UK Power Networks said: “Engineers are working quickly and safely to restore power supplies in the Worcester Road area of Sutton after a fault developed on underground electricity equipment. Our team isolated the affected part of the network and is carrying out repairs to reconnect customers as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

Fire brigade response

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “A fire engine from Sutton Fire Station responded to reports of smoke issuing from a manhole near the junction of York and Worcester Road, Sutton. The Brigade was called about the incident at 0642, and crews were on scene until 0716 when the incident was handed over to UK Power Networks.”
