Gatwick Airport water outage: bottled water handed out

Gatwick Airport is distributing bottled water to vulnerable passengers after a loss of running water, water fountains, and flushing toilets due to a disruption to its local water supply. The issue, which began on Sunday morning, has affected both terminals.

Airport statement and contingency measures

In a statement, Gatwick Airport said: 'A water issue in the Horley area is causing disruption at the airport this morning. The problem is affecting water supply in both terminals and is currently under investigation.' The airport added that bottled water is being made available to passengers and staff across the airport and other contingency measures are being put in place to ensure the welfare of passengers. 'We will provide further updates and apologise for any inconvenience to passengers,' the statement concluded.

Restaurants closed, flights unaffected

Restaurants in terminals one and two have been closed as a result of the water problems. However, according to sources, flights remain unaffected by the water issues, and operations continue as normal.

Water supplier issues

Gatwick's local water supplier is SES Water, which serves the Surrey, West Sussex, Kent, and South London region. The company reported on Sunday morning that postcodes TN8, TN11, and parts of RH1 – which covers Gatwick Airport – had experienced low water pressure or a loss of supply. SES Water added that there had earlier been issues at its Bough Beech Water Treatment Works. Vulnerable residents are being provided with water while teams work to fix the supply issues.
