London's Mayor, Sadiq Khan, is set to issue a stark warning that artificial intelligence (AI) poses a threat of mass unemployment in the capital unless urgent action is taken. He will announce a major new initiative to equip Londoners with the skills needed for the future.
An "AI Taskforce" and Free Training for the Capital
In a keynote speech at Mansion House on Thursday, January 15, Sir Sadiq will launch the ‘London Taskforce on AI and The Future of Work’. This body will draw expertise from government, business, the skills sector, and the AI industry itself.
A central pillar of this project will see City Hall commission free AI training for all Londoners. The Mayor argues that while AI has the potential to transform public services and boost productivity, the city must actively "seize the potential of AI" to prevent widespread job losses.
Why the Mayor Fears a "Colossal" Labour Market Shock
The Mayor's concerns are backed by recent polling. More than half of Londoners surveyed in November expect AI to impact their job within the next year, a figure Khan believes is an underestimation.
Unlike previous automation waves that primarily affected manufacturing, this technological shift is expected to hit white-collar professions hardest. Key London sectors like finance, professional services, and the creative industries are among the most exposed.
"Without proactive action, old roles may disappear faster than new ones are created," Khan will state. He highlights the particular risk to entry-level jobs, which could deprive young people of their first career step and the economy of future leaders.
The Broader Context of AI Risks and Regulation
The announcement comes amid growing scrutiny of AI's societal impact. The technology has faced backlash for misuse, such as on social media platform X, where AI was used to manipulate real photos. This incident previously led UK ministers to threaten a ban until safeguards were implemented.
Mayor Khan's plan positions London to proactively manage this transition, focusing on skills and adaptation rather than resistance. The success of the taskforce and training scheme will be crucial in determining whether the capital can harness AI's benefits while mitigating its most severe risks to employment.
