Hot Drink Ban Causes Headache for Early Morning Flyers

Passengers travelling with Jet2 and Ryanair are facing a new travel headache as both budget airlines have firmly banned the common airport purchase of hot drinks. The rule, which came into focus in November 2025, means that those early morning teas, coffees, and mocha lattes purchased in the departure lounge must be consumed before boarding or left behind.

This crackdown is part of a wider set of regulations from the carriers, which includes Ryanair's move to digital-only boarding passes effective from November 12, 2025. For many travellers, the hot drink prohibition is a lesser-known rule that could catch them out at the gate.

Why Have the Airlines Imposed This Ban?

The primary reason cited by both airlines is passenger safety. A spokesperson for Jet2 stated that passengers 'can't bring hot food or hot drinks onboard our planes for safety reasons.' Similarly, Ryanair's policy directs its ground staff that they 'cannot allow passengers to board the plane with hot drinks.'

Instead of bringing your own, both carriers suggest that travellers order their hot beverages from the in-flight menu once the aircraft has taken off. This policy, however, is not universal across all airlines. Competitors such as EasyJet and TUI do permit passengers to bring hot drinks onboard, provided the cup has a secure lid.

What Can You Actually Bring Onboard?

So, what are the options for a hungry or thirsty flyer? The rules are quite specific. For drinks, soft drinks bought airside are permitted, but any alcohol purchased in the airport is strictly forbidden under both airlines' policies. Ryanair's 'Feel Free' rules explicitly ban consuming any alcohol not bought on the aircraft, and cabin crew have the authority to confiscate it.

When it comes to food, the key is to think cold and pre-packaged. Cold items like sandwiches, snacks, and fruit are allowed. However, any hot food or what Jet2 describes as 'strong-smelling foods and drinks' are a definite no-go. The airline also advises against bringing perishable items onboard.

Travellers heading to EU nations must also be aware of post-Brexit rules. Regardless of where it was purchased, you cannot take meat or dairy products into the EU. This means a ham and cheese sandwich must be eaten during the flight or thrown away before you disembark.

With these regulations in place, the message from Jet2 and Ryanair is clear: for a smooth journey, plan your snacks and drinks carefully and be prepared to wait for that hot cuppa until you're in the air.
