Isar Aerospace, a German startup, has successfully launched the first commercial rocket to reach orbit from continental Europe. The uncrewed Spectrum rocket lifted off from Andøya Spaceport in Arctic Norway on Saturday, carrying five small satellites and an in-flight technology experiment.
A milestone for European space access
The launch marks a significant breakthrough for Europe's efforts to secure independent access to space, according to Isar Aerospace. The company said on Sunday it would rapidly expand satellite deployments following the successful orbital insertion.
Daniel Metzler, Isar co-founder and CEO, told reporters: "Launch capability is right now the biggest bottleneck in the entire industry."
Political and industry reaction
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz hailed the launch in a statement, calling it "the beginning of a new era." Merz had visited Isar's launch site in March, underscoring Europe's push for greater autonomy as the global order shifts under US President Donald Trump's administration.
Andrius Kubilius, the EU defence and space commissioner, wrote on X: "Europe's independent access to space just got a major boost."
Second attempt after initial failure
This was Isar's second launch attempt. The company's first rocket plunged into the sea and exploded shortly after takeoff from the same site 18 months ago.
Isar has said it already has five more rockets in production and is focused on scaling up operations to meet rising demand, with a long-term goal of conducting about 40 launches a year.
Expansion and market context
The German company is also developing a second launch site in Nova Scotia, eastern Canada.
Global players in the satellite launch market include Elon Musk's SpaceX, which launches from the US, and the French firm ArianeGroup, a joint venture between Airbus and Safran that uses a spaceport in French Guiana, South America.
Isar's successful launch positions the company to compete in the fast-growing market for satellite launches, with several countries in the region seeking a foothold in the industry.
