Police in Finland are investigating the death of influencer Olivia Oras, 27, after a liposuction procedure went fatally wrong. Oras lost consciousness after being administered anaesthetic at a private clinic in Helsinki and died several days later at Helsinki University Hospital on September 3.
Investigation into aggravated manslaughter
Helsinki Police have launched a probe into possible aggravated manslaughter, a crime that carries a jail sentence of up to six years. A spokesperson for the force told People that the investigation 'is in its early stages' and there is 'no further information to share at this time'.
Oras's family has 'filed a police report about the matter', according to a spokesperson speaking to People. While individuals under investigation have not been publicly identified, the Plastic Surgery Center in Helsinki was searched by police. Authorities found that clients were 'seriously endangered' by clinicians and ordered the 'immediate suspension' of both the company's locations.
Rise to fame and personal struggles
Oras first gained attention at age 14 when she began documenting her life online. In 2016, at 16, she appeared in the documentary The Perfect Selfie, which followed her for 18 months and was described as a 'modern coming-of-age story in the social media era'. The film depicted her relationship with the internet and her followers.
Following the documentary's release, Oras developed anxiety and moved to Amsterdam, shutting down her social media accounts. She worked at a café and planned to attend university, but her life took another turn after witnessing a friend in her apartment building die by suicide—an event she said she couldn't shake from her mind.
'I was just building the life of my dreams, but now I saw what happened in my eyes over and over again,' she said in a 2024 interview.
Later years and advocacy
Oras returned to Helsinki to live with her parents, where she struggled with alcoholism and a sleeping pill addiction, which she spoke about publicly. She entered an addiction facility for a month in 2022.
In her final years, Oras founded an organisation supporting pulmonary disease research after her father was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. She also served as Head of Community at an AI start-up and worked in marketing for a wellness technology company.
The investigation into her death remains ongoing, with police yet to release further details.
