Utz has issued a voluntary recall of two US potato chip brands, Zapp’s and Dirty, over concerns of possible salmonella contamination. The recall, announced on Monday, stems from seasoning used on the products that may contain the harmful bacteria.
Affected Products
According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall applies to nine specific chip varieties. These include three flavors of Zapp’s chips in various bag sizes and three flavors of Dirty chips in 2-ounce packages. The affected products are:
- Zapp’s Brand Bayou Blackened Ranch Potato Chips (1.5oz, 2.5oz, and 8oz)
- Zapp’s Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips (1.5oz)
- Zapp’s Brand Big Cheezy Potato Chip (2.5oz and 8oz)
- Dirty Brand Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips (2oz)
- Dirty Brand Maui Onion Potato Chip (2oz)
- Dirty Brand Sour Cream and Onion Potato Chips (2oz)
No other Utz products are included in this recall.
Cause of Contamination
The potential contamination is linked to a seasoning ingredient containing dry milk powder sourced from California Dairies Inc. and supplied through a third-party vendor. Although the seasoning batches tested negative for salmonella before use, the recall was initiated as a precautionary measure. Consumers are advised not to eat these products and to discard them immediately.
Broader Impact
The California Dairies milk powder recall has affected other companies as well. Ghirardelli has recalled certain powdered drink mixes, including frappe and hot cocoa products. John B Sanfilippo & Son, a major supplier of nuts and snacks, also recalled specific snack mix items due to the possibly contaminated milk powder.
Health Risks of Salmonella
Salmonella is a group of bacteria that causes foodborne illness, accounting for about one in four diarrheal diseases worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Symptoms include sudden fever, stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, and occasional vomiting. While most infections are mild, they can become severe or life-threatening, particularly for children and older adults.
