Petrol prices have climbed back above $2 a litre, while diesel has reached $2.40 in some Australian cities as fuel costs accelerate. Oil prices have steadily increased since the US resumed strikes on Iran, with Brent crude rising from about US$70 on 2 July to US$87 today. Additionally, the Australian government reduced its fuel excise discount by 16 cents a litre, contributing to the price hikes.
Current fuel prices across cities
Service stations have passed the higher wholesale costs onto customers. According to Motormouth, Melbourne is facing diesel prices of $2.40 a litre, up 66 cents from its June low of 173.9 cents per litre. Canberra diesel is at 238 cents per litre, Brisbane at 234.4, Adelaide at 233.7, Sydney at 232.8, and Perth at 226.4.
Unleaded petrol price increases
Unleaded petrol prices have risen to 204.1 cents per litre in Canberra. Melbourne is at 195.6 cents per litre, Brisbane at 195.2, Adelaide at 192.6, and Sydney at 191.1 – the latter up from its June low of 152.2. Perth has seen the biggest jump, with unleaded at 196.6 cents per litre today, up nearly 50 cents from its June low of 148.3 cents per litre.
