The pub occupies a grand 1930s building on a site that was once a nunnery during the Reformation. Its name derives from a legend about a rebellious Mother Superior who was murdered and her head displayed on a pikestaff.
Today, the pub offers a far livelier atmosphere. Rosie Hewitson, Time Out London's things to do editor, praised its 'calendar of campy entertainment from drag-king cabaret to the NSFW Cake Sit.' The venue also features a shrine to Britney Spears and serves New York-style pizzas from its resident kitchen, Slice Circle.

Time Out's guide evaluated pubs across the UK based on criteria including exceptional staff, charismatic decor, a perfect drink lineup, and a strong sense of community. The list mostly features pubs outside London, but the Old Nun's Head earned its spot as a standout in the capital.
