Made Hundreds Selling Clothes Online: 5 Tips to Start

I've made hundreds of dollars selling my clothes online, and here are five tips for getting started. This story originally appeared in the Filter US newsletter, which focuses on buying fewer, better things. Each week, the newsletter offers smart, practical recommendations on living better, from worthwhile purchases to lasting habits and ideas.

Recently, I consulted over 20 professional stylists for their top spring wardrobe updates for men and women. These stories inspired me to make better use of what's already in my closet and reminded me of items I've fallen out of love with. It's hard to part with a dress worn in Greece or a favorite high school sweatshirt, even if I haven't worn them in years. Dropping them at Goodwill risks them ending up in a landfill instead of with someone who wants them.

One of my favorite ways to give unused pieces a new home is listing them on Depop, an online reselling platform. I've sold 37 items and made hundreds of dollars over the years. Here are five tips to help you make money from your old clothing, whether it's a pair of vintage Levi's or an evening gown tucked away in your closet.

1. Pick Your Platform(s)

The main online selling platforms include Depop, Poshmark, and Mercari. I've often chosen Depop because its primary demographic is Gen Z, which matches the trendier items I sell. However, listing clothing across multiple platforms increases your chances of making a sale.

2. Search Before You List

Put yourself in a buyer's mindset. A little research goes a long way. Search for similar items and note which details are mentioned: color, cut, price. This helps you decide what information to include and set realistic expectations. Also check if the item is still available new from a retailer. If it's in stock with free shipping, you may need to adjust your pricing. Conversely, a band T-shirt from a decade ago might be worth more than you think. But don't overthink it; platforms like Depop and Poshmark offer pricing suggestions based on similar items sold.

3. Reduce Friction

The more information you provide in your listing—such as pit-to-pit measurements or lining material—the less back-and-forth you'll have with potential buyers. This addresses their hesitations upfront and streamlines the sale.

4. Channel Your Inner Documentarian

Buyers want to know that the item matches its description. Always photograph the clothing in good lighting and ensure it's entirely in the frame. Try the item on a hanger and lying flat to see which looks better, or use both. Include multiple pictures per listing, including a photo of the tag. Don't forget to capture any minor flaws, like loose threads or small stains, to reduce the risk of negative reviews.

5. Don't Be a Ghost

I have nearly 150 followers on Depop. While it's not a classic social network, gaining followers helps build credibility as a seller, especially when you're just starting out. I gained followers by following other accounts and liking their listings. Finally, use the app or website at least once a month. Otherwise, platforms like Mercari and Depop will mark your items as inactive, preventing purchases.
