Man dies, three injured in Bedford explosion

A man has died and three others have been taken to hospital following an explosion at an industrial estate in Bedford. Emergency services were called to Brunel Road on the afternoon of July 23 after a fire broke out in an industrial unit.

Residents describe loud blast

Local residents reported hearing a loud noise, with some describing it as sounding like a 'bomb going off' and others saying they 'thought it was a shooting.' Louise Church said: 'It did sound like an explosion of some sort, followed by the sound of lots of debris falling.'

Police statement on casualties

Bedfordshire Police confirmed: 'One man died at the scene and three others have been taken to hospital to receive medical treatment.' An initial cordon was put in place for public safety but has since been stood down. Officers will remain on site until the investigation is handed over to the Health and Safety Executive.
