Kellogg's is reviving a beloved childhood tradition by bringing back toys inside cereal boxes for the first time in over a decade. The move comes as part of a collaboration with Disney's upcoming Toy Story 5, set to hit theaters on June 19.
Nostalgic Campaign
The new campaign, dubbed "Toys Back In The Box," features figurines of iconic characters Buzz Lightyear, Woody, and Jessie. According to a WK Kellogg spokesperson, this represents a "major first step in bringing playable toys back inside cereal boxes." The company is exploring opportunities to expand the initiative beyond the US.
US Launch, UK Hopes
Currently, the promotion is only available in the United States. However, WK Kellogg hinted at future possibilities, stating they are "always looking for ways to continue creating joyful moments for families." The Kellogg Company split into two separate entities in 2023, complicating a potential UK launch. US consumers last saw toys in Kellogg's boxes in 2015, while UK fans have been waiting since around 2009.
Marketing and Cultural Impact
Laura Newman, VP of brand marketing at WK Kellogg Co, emphasized the nostalgia factor: "At Kellogg's, there's a real sense of childhood nostalgia tied to the moments families remember most – and breakfast is a big part of that. Bringing toys back inside the box reintroduces that sense of discovery through a simple, screen-free moment of play." Lylle Breier from The Walt Disney Studios added that the collaboration highlights how toys inspire creativity, friendship, and play.
Fond Memories
UK fans have long expressed longing for the golden age of cereal toys. On Reddit's r/AskUK, users recalled favorites like Star Wars collectibles from 1999, "spokie dokies" for bike wheels, and "Monster in My Pocket" figures. Some lamented the shift to digital codes, while others admitted to searching eBay for vintage toys.
Vintage Toy Value
Old cereal box toys and other 90s collectibles, such as original Furbies, can fetch significant prices on resale sites like eBay, with rare items going for around £100 or more.
