Kathy Griffin, 65, has set the record straight after sparking widespread reaction by apparently 'hard launching' a relationship with a 22-year-old man. The comedian revealed the entire episode was a 'social media sociological experiment' designed to highlight ageist and sexist double standards.
Social Experiment Exposes Double Standards
In an initial Instagram post, Griffin shared a photo of herself holding hands with a young man about to enter a black car, captioned: 'He's 22. Have at it, internet.' The post triggered an outpouring of support, with followers calling her 'iconic' and encouraging her to 'live her best life.' However, Griffin noted a stark contrast on Threads, where she faced 'slut shaming, accusations of grooming and debates about how gross it would be.'
On July 10, 2026, Griffin posted a follow-up video clarifying that the man was her bodyguard, 'helping me with security during my trip to NYC.' She described the stunt as 'harmless fun' and called out high-profile older men in age-gap relationships, including Luke Wilson (54) with his 24-year-old girlfriend, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, and Jay-Z and Beyoncé.
Fan Reactions and Praise
The revelation was met with continued praise. User courtneyastodden commented: 'A Queen being a Queen.' Mo.instagr wrote: 'The double standard is real.' ConnieMarieLynn expressed disappointment: 'I'm disappointed!! I was LOVING 22 for you!'
Griffin's social experiment follows her recent criticism of Jimmy Fallon and The Tonight Show for hosting UFC fighter Conor McGregor, who was found liable for rape in 2025. She stated: 'I do think it was a bad call for him to have rapist Conor McGregor on… it sends yet another message to women and marginalised folks everywhere that we’re not equal.' Griffin speculated she had been banned from the show since 2017, after a controversial photo holding up a likeness of President Trump's severed head.
