Bond Street is no stranger to glitzy boutiques and high-end shopping destinations, but there is always room for one more. After years of meticulous planning and construction, Hermés has officially unveiled its grand 'mega boutique', Maison Bond Street, at 166 New Bond Street in central London.
A New Era for Hermés in London
The new store replaces the brand's former flagship at 155 New Bond Street, which closed on May 29, as well as its Selfridges concession. This opening marks a significant milestone, making London one of only six cities worldwide to host a Hermés Maison. The boutique spans an impressive 2,000 square metres across five floors, encompassing six interconnected Grade II listed buildings and featuring two rooftop terraces.
Architecture and Design
The Maison is the brainchild of Parisian architect Denis Montel, who began work on the project in 2021 in collaboration with Rena Dumas Architecture Intérieure. The interior design seamlessly blends the 19th-century charm of the buildings with contemporary elements. Visitors are welcomed through a seven-metre-high façade before entering a grand hall that houses Hermés' exquisite silk collection. Other standout features include a breathtaking limestone staircase and a spiral glass staircase.
Art and Luxury
Beyond the classic leather goods, fashion pieces, and jewellery, the boutique showcases over 500 artworks. A striking horse sculpture by British artist Jessica Wetherly stands among the displays, while bespoke wall art by London illustrator Katie Scott adds a vibrant touch to the windows. The third floor is dedicated to repair and refurbishment services, where skilled artisans tend to Hermés items.
Historical Significance
The building itself has a rich history. The first floor was once home to the famous 19th-century actor Henry Irving, while other rooms were the residence of Florence Nightingale. A Victorian elevator has been meticulously restored by the only remaining Victorian lift mechanic in the UK.
Hermés in London
With this new opening, Hermés now operates four locations in London: Sloane Street, Harrods, Royal Exchange, and the new Maison Bond Street. The boutique is located at 166 New Bond Street, W1S 4RB, and promises an immersive experience for luxury enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
