Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch on November 19, 2026, with standard and ultimate editions priced at $79.99 and $99.99 respectively. However, the announcement has sparked significant backlash among fans due to two major omissions: the lack of a physical disc and the absence of online multiplayer at launch.
No Physical Disc in Box
Both editions of GTA 6 will ship with a download code instead of a Blu-ray disc. Physical copies will contain only a code to download the game, meaning players cannot share or resell the game as they could with traditional discs. One fan on X wrote, 'I am devastated. GTA 6 physical copy won’t have a disc, but just a code to download the game. Waited years for this wtf @rockstargames.' Another added, 'Rockstar has gone full anti-consumer with GTA 6. Charging $79.99 for a game that ships as nothing more than a fancy empty box with a download code. At this point it’s straight up disrespectful.'
Reddit users also expressed frustration, with one commenter stating, 'If I’m forced into digital, I might as well just wait for the PC version.' The digital-only approach may be intended to prevent leaks, as retail copies have historically been compromised before launch. Rockstar has not confirmed any plans to release a disc-based version after launch.
Ultimate Edition Content Sparks Controversy
The Ultimate Edition includes a large amount of in-game DLC, such as cosmetic items and unique stores. However, some fans are irked that mission content, including the Ptt Youngin$ Illegal Goods Store raid, is locked behind the higher-priced edition. One X user posted, 'A Hair Salon, Tattoo Shop, Clothing Store, and Mod Shop locked behind the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition? Rockstar, please.' A Reddit thread on the GTA6unmoderated subreddit titled 'The most egregious ultimate edition in history' noted, 'I can’t quite believe how much content is being locked behind this ultimate edition, never seen anything like it.' It remains unclear whether these stores will be completely inaccessible or simply boarded up in the standard version.
Online Multiplayer Delayed
Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will be a 'single-player experience' at launch, meaning the online component will not be available on November 19, 2026. This mirrors the launch of GTA 5, which debuted on September 17, 2013, while GTA Online arrived on October 1, 2013. However, the timeline for GTA 6's online mode remains unknown. Pre-ordering GTA 6 includes a free month of GTA+, which provides monthly in-game cash for use in the current GTA Online, suggesting Rockstar is prioritizing the existing online platform. The big question is whether the next GTA Online will be a free addition or a paid standalone download, given the revenue generated by the current version.
PS5 Features Announced
According to the PlayStation blog, GTA 6 will 'play best' on PlayStation 5, with support for the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, optional controller speaker use, Tempest 3D Audiotech, and 'near instant load times' via the SSD. The PlayStation Store listing also notes the game will be PS5 Pro Enhanced, though specific improvements for the PS5 Pro are unclear, with hopes for stable 4K resolution at 60fps.
