Top 200 best-selling N64 games reveal surprising top 10 hits

New sales data from Circana analyst Mat Piscatella has revealed the top 200 best-selling Nintendo 64 games in the US, marking the console's 30th anniversary. The list, ranked by unit sales, includes over half of the N64's 388-game library, with some surprising entries in the top 10.

Super Mario 64 leads the pack

Super Mario 64 tops the list as expected, given its status as a launch title that defined the system. GoldenEye 007 claims second place, ahead of Mario Kart 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in third and fourth, respectively. The rest of the top 10 includes Super Smash Bros., Pokémon Stadium, Diddy Kong Racing, Star Fox, Donkey Kong 64, and Pokémon Snap.

Unexpected top 10 entries

Pokémon Snap at number 10 is surprising, considering it took over two decades for a sequel to arrive on Nintendo Switch. Diddy Kong Racing also ranks unexpectedly high, as it has been largely neglected since its 2007 DS remake, with no re-release on Nintendo Switch Online. According to Piscatella, the list encompasses “over half of the entire Nintendo 64 library,” making it a comprehensive look at the console's commercial performance.

Star Wars titles dominate the top 20

Three Star Wars games appear in the top 20: Shadows of the Empire (11), Episode I: Racer (16), and Rogue Squadron (19). This aligns with the N64's lifespan coinciding with the Special Editions and the start of the prequel era. Banjo-Kazooie sits at number 15, lower than expected given its critical acclaim and early release window.

Regional quirks in the rankings

Piscatella notes that these are US sales, so titles like WCW/NWO Revenge (13) and Cruis'n USA (17) may be inflated compared to other territories. The list also features numerous sports games from publishers other than EA and 2K, reflecting the era's diverse sports gaming landscape.
