Shooting disrupts festivities
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the shooting happened at around 10 p.m. local time. Prior to the incident, huge crowds were lining the streets, with cars honking horns and people waving Mexican flags. Live video captured the moment a car was performing a doughnut at the junction when approximately three gunshots rang out, causing chaos as people ran for cover.
At least one victim was seen crouching on the side of the road, and bystanders provided first aid before emergency services arrived. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department stated that victims were discovered in several spots along or near Whittier Boulevard, but the incident is being treated as a single shooting event.
