Ubisoft has cancelled an extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, according to a report from Insider Gaming, in favour of a new spin-off codenamed Kodiak. The multiplayer game, known internally as Maverick, has been shelved as work begins on a project described by sources as 'really ambitious'.
Maverick cancelled, Kodiak in development
Insider Gaming reports that the Far Cry multiplayer spin-off Maverick, an extraction shooter, has been cancelled. However, a new game set within the Far Cry universe, codenamed Kodiak, has passed the conception stage at Vantage Studios, the newly created Ubisoft subsidiary. Kodiak is built on the foundations of Maverick but is said to be several years from release.
According to the report, Kodiak is an open-world first-person shooter where 'player interactions and player-driven stories take centre stage'. It remains unclear whether Kodiak will be multiplayer or single-player focused.
Far Cry's recent history and future
Far Cry has not seen a new entry since 2021's Far Cry 6, which received mixed reviews. Ubisoft has not officially announced a new game, but rumours have persisted about a mainline sequel and a multiplayer spin-off. The next mainline Far Cry game, codenamed Blackbird, is said to include a multiplayer element where several players can experience the world together. It is expected to launch before Kodiak, given the latter's early stage of development.
The big question is how the next mainline Far Cry game will refresh a formula that has grown stale. Far Cry 6 starred Giancarlo Esposito as a dictator on a fictional Caribbean island, but recent sequels have struggled to match the impact of Far Cry 3.
Vantage Studios' role
Vantage Studios is managing development across Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six titles. The only confirmed project they are working on is Assassin's Creed Hexe, which has seen notable shifts in senior management.
