Emirates has introduced adjustable headrests on its refurbished aircraft, offering passengers a new way to sleep more comfortably during flights. The feature, which allows the headrest to pull forward into a cushioned surface, has been met with widespread approval on social media.
How the new headrests work
Instagram user @12cities.co posted a video demonstrating the headrest, which has garnered over 26,000 likes in less than 24 hours. In the clip, she pulls down the headrest—shaped like a sturdy neck pillow—and rests her head on it, smiling. 'Emirates just did what?' she wrote. 'Best flight of my life ngl.'
Commenters quickly dubbed the feature a 'game-changer' and 'great and awesome for travellers.' One noted that 'someone thought bout passengers comfort on long flights,' while another called it 'genius.'
Scope of the retrofit
The upgrade has been implemented on 95 Emirates aircraft so far, including 42 Airbus A380s and 53 Boeing 777s. This represents more than one-third of the airline's fleet, increasing the likelihood that passengers will encounter the feature on their flights.
While the influencer appeared to be flying economy, premium economy seats have also received a major upgrade, featuring 'full leg and foot rests and six-way adjustable headrests,' according to the airline.
Emirates president comments
'The Emirates retrofit programme revolves around the central premise that we will offer our customers a truly elevated experience every time they choose to travel with us,' said Sir Tim Clark, Emirates Airline president. 'To this end, our engineering team has been working continuously and at pace in close collaboration with an ecosystem of partners and suppliers to meticulously refresh and integrate the best-in-class products to each aircraft in the programme. Our retrofit programme has raised the bar at every step, in terms of complexity, scale and detailed craftsmanship.'
Hygiene concerns
Some passengers expressed concerns about hygiene, with one commenter saying, 'Omg I'm not putting my face on that without THOROUGHLY disinfecting it because omg.' Another added, 'Bare face on a public surface, no chance.' Others suggested using antibacterial wipes to clean the headrest before use.
Alternative sleep tips
For travelers not flying Emirates, the seatbelt trend on TikTok offers a makeshift sleeping position: raise knees to chest, place feet together on the seat, and secure the seatbelt around the ankles to prevent legs from sliding. Bella Sapsworth, a former Emirates flight attendant, also advises passengers to recline their seats without hesitation, stating, 'You pay for a reclining seat – so use it!'
