BBC commentator mistakes Pharrell for A$AP Rocky

BBC commentator Guy Mowbray has gone viral after mistakenly identifying music icon Pharrell Williams as A$AP Rocky during the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. The blunder occurred roughly a quarter of the way into the match, as cameras panned to Pharrell in the stands.

Commentator's gaffe during star-studded final

Mowbray, who was joined by England legend Alan Shearer in the commentary box, originally identified Pharrell as 'AKA Rocky' before quickly correcting himself: 'I think that is AKA Rocky… or ASAP Rocky, sorry.' Despite Pharrell wearing a cap and sunglasses, A$AP Rocky was not present at the match.

Social media reaction

Eagle-eyed viewers on social media quickly noticed the error and took the opportunity to poke fun at the veteran commentator. User @radtunez wrote: 'Commentator really just called Pharrell “A$AP Rocky.” That’s a wild miss.' Another user, M, commented: 'BBC commentator calling Pharrell Williams “I think that’s aka rocky.. or asap rocky” bye.' Meanwhile, @stechu said: 'BBC calling Pharrell ASAP Rocky. This World Cup coverage cannot end soon enough.'
