EA is gearing up to release a major update for Battlefield 6 in an effort to regain the trust of a player base that has become increasingly polarized since the game's launch. The upcoming Season 4, set to debut on July 21, promises naval battles, a new map, and a potential crossover with the Top Gun franchise.
Season 4 Details and Top Gun Crossover
Season 4 introduces Tsuru Reef, which EA claims will be the game's largest map to date. The map features sprawling islands, dynamic waves, and a mix of boats, jets, helicopters, and ground vehicles. Two new boat vehicles—the RCB-90 Patrol Boat and the 7.7m NSW RHIB—along with four new weapons, including a sniper rifle, will be added. Wake Island, a fan-favorite location from previous Battlefield titles, will return later in the season.
EA has not officially confirmed the Top Gun crossover, but a teaser at the end of the Season 4 trailer strongly hints at a collaboration. It remains unclear whether the crossover will be limited to vehicle skins or if it will include a character skin based on Tom Cruise's character. This move is notable because EA previously mocked Call of Duty's reliance on celebrity cameos in Battlefield 6's marketing. However, the trailer has been well-received, garnering 16,000 likes on YouTube and positive reactions on the Battlefield 6 subreddit.
Player Dissatisfaction and Bot Lobbies
Despite the initial success of Battlefield 6, which outperformed Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 both critically and commercially, the game's popularity has waned. Players have expressed frustration with bot lobbies, where computer-controlled allies or opponents fill matches, leading to concerns about low player counts. One player complained, 'If I want to play in the morning or do some late night gaming, I can’t find non-bot lobbies. During the weekend I tried to play at 10am, but I couldn’t find a single match that wasn’t filled with bots and I tried every possible game mode.' Another added, 'The introduction of bots along with this s***ty matchmaking and disbanding lobbies has completely turned me away from this game.'
Negative reviews on Steam also cite boring gameplay and persistent bugs. However, there are still positive reviews from players who enjoy the game. The layoffs earlier this year across all four of Battlefield 6's development studios have likely impacted post-launch support.
EA's Investment in Battlefield 6
EA has invested heavily in Battlefield 6, with multiple studios working on the game, including Criterion Games, which has reportedly halted work on the Need for Speed series to focus on Battlefield. The company sees the franchise as a key asset, but it must address the game's polarizing reputation to maintain its lead over Call of Duty.
