Assassin's Creed Odyssey has seen a surge in players following the release of Christopher Nolan's film The Odyssey, despite the game having little in common with the movie's story. Data from Alinea Analytics, which tracked player activity across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms, reveals that daily active players rose from 122,000 on July 17, the day the film debuted in UK and US cinemas, to 233,000 by July 27—a 90% increase.
Platform-Specific Growth
On PlayStation, the daily player count increased 94% to 114,000, while on Xbox, it more than doubled from 36,000 to 84,000. Alinea Analytics estimates that the majority of this new engagement comes from subscription services like PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass, rather than new purchases. The game has sold approximately 400,000 copies since this time last year, but it is unclear how many of those sales occurred in the last two weeks.
Why the Surge?
The surge appears to be driven by players either discovering the game through subscription services after watching the film or returning to it due to the movie's popularity. Ubisoft has made a few promotional social media posts tying Assassin's Creed Odyssey to the film, but the company is primarily focused on advertising the newly released Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.
Limited Similarities
Assassin's Creed Odyssey shares only its Ancient Greece setting with Homer's epic poem. The game is set several hundred years after the events of The Odyssey and contains few supernatural elements. However, Ubisoft did add a cyclops boss fight as part of a free post-launch update and released a DLC expansion called The Fate Of Atlantis, which features interactions with Greek gods and mythological monsters.
