Manhunt Launched Following Sexual Assault in London Underground Lift and Train

Detectives from the British Transport Police have initiated a major investigation and public appeal after a woman was sexually assaulted inside a lift at a London Underground station, before being followed and attacked again on a rush hour train. The disturbing incident occurred at Elephant and Castle station in south London on Friday, March 6, 2026, at approximately 5:20pm.

Details of the Assault

The victim was using the lift at Elephant and Castle station when she was first targeted by a stranger. The perpetrator then followed her onto a Northern line Tube carriage traveling toward Stockwell station, where he sexually assaulted her a second time. Authorities have now released CCTV images of a man they urgently wish to identify and speak to, as he may possess critical information that could assist the ongoing investigation.

Safety Concerns on London Public Transport

While recent Transport for London (TfL) statistics indicate a slight decrease in sexual crimes on the capital's public transport network, the numbers remain alarmingly high. Between July and December 2025, a total of 919 sexual offences were recorded, compared to 1,020 in the same period in 2024.

Westminster station reported the highest incidence of sexual offences last year, with 111 cases accounting for 12.1% of the total. This station also recorded the most violent incidents (589), robberies (107), and hate crimes (222).

Other stations with significant numbers include:

  • Newham in east London: 69 incidents (7.5%)
  • Camden: 60 cases

The peak time for sexual crimes aligns with evening commuter travel, with over 30% of all offences occurring between 4pm and 8pm during rush hour.

Broader Crime Trends on Transport Network

The most frequently reported crime on London's transport system remains theft from passengers, with 9,759 incidents recorded in the six months leading up to the end of 2025. This is followed by violence and public order offences.

Public Appeal for Information

British Transport Police are urging anyone who recognises the individual in the released CCTV images to come forward immediately. Witnesses should contact the force directly, quoting reference number 568 of 6 March, or provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers.
