A Greater Anglia train has partially derailed near Wickford in Essex, marking the second railway incident in the UK within 24 hours. The derailment has blocked all lines between Southend Victoria and Wickford, leading to cancellations and major disruption for passengers.
The incident occurred just hours after a Southern Rail train derailed near Lewes railway station in East Sussex, leaving two people severely injured and 18 others with less serious injuries. That earlier derailment involved around 150 passengers on a service from London Victoria to Eastbourne, with several carriages turning on their side, trapping people for hours and prompting a major incident to be declared.
National Rail statement and service impact
In an initial statement, National Rail said: “There is a problem currently under investigation between Southend Victoria and Wickford, meaning that all lines are blocked. As a result, trains running between Southend Victoria and London Liverpool Street will be cancelled.”
Disruption, delays, and cancellations are expected to continue until at least 6pm, according to National Rail. A spokesperson later confirmed that responders were “dealing with a derailment” and “working quickly to understand the situation and to provide assistance where needed.” They added: “We will provide further information in due course.”

As of the latest update, no injuries have been reported in the Essex derailment. Emergency services are on scene, and an investigation into the cause is underway.
