London Stations Dominate UK's Top 10 Crime Hotspots, New Police Data Reveals
Newly released figures from the British Transport Police have identified the railway stations across the United Kingdom with the highest recorded crime rates. The data highlights a troubling landscape of assaults, thefts, and drug-related offences, with some stations experiencing over 1,000 incidents in the past year alone. Across the nation, nearly 18,000 crimes were reported at the 30 most affected stations, averaging approximately 50 incidents per day. While London's major transport hubs dominate the list, significant stations in Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, and Liverpool also feature prominently, underscoring a widespread issue.
Union and Official Responses to Rising Crime
RMT General Secretary Eddie Dempsey expressed grave concern, stating to the Mirror: "These shocking statistics underline the urgent need for an increased presence of British Transport Police on our railways. Our members face punches, threats, spitting, and abuse simply for doing their jobs and keeping the railway operational. This takes a severe physical and psychological toll, creating an environment where both staff and passengers feel unsafe." Dempsey called for a properly funded police force with consistent visibility year-round, not just during major incidents, and referenced the horrific mass stabbing at Huntingdon station last year as a stark reminder of the dangers. He urged government intervention with long-term funding, legislation for standalone offences against transport workers, and an end to unsafe lone working practices.
In response, a Network Rail spokesperson emphasized: "Millions of people pass through our stations daily, and the likelihood of becoming a crime victim is incredibly low. Our stations are staffed throughout the day by dedicated teams, supported by regular British Transport Police patrols and extensive CCTV coverage. We remain committed to collaborating closely with the BTP to ensure public safety." A British Transport Police spokesperson added: "Every rail passenger deserves a safe journey, and we are dedicated to protecting this right. We continuously work to raise awareness on reporting crime, such as through our 61016 text-to-report service. Reports and intelligence guide our patrols, ensuring officers are strategically placed to deter crime and respond swiftly. Our uniformed and plain clothes officers are on duty day and night to maintain safety and make the network hostile to offenders."
