Hero train worker discharged after Huntingdon attack

A railway employee celebrated as a hero for his brave actions during a horrific stabbing incident on a train has finally been discharged from hospital to continue his recovery at home.

A Courageous Act in a Moment of Crisis

Samir Zitouni, a 48-year-old customer experience host, was working onboard a London North Eastern Railway (LNER) service on November 1 when a violent assault unfolded. The attack, which began shortly after the train departed Peterborough station, left Mr. Zitouni with multiple serious injuries, and he was subsequently placed in a critical condition in hospital.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of NHS medical staff, his condition improved sufficiently for him to be discharged. The family of the long-serving LNER employee, who had been with the company for over two decades, expressed their profound gratitude for the public support and the medical care he received.

Justice and Recovery: The Path Forward

Following the incident, Anthony Williams, 32, was remanded into custody at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on November 3. He faces ten charges of attempted murder in connection with the attack that shocked the local community and the wider rail network.

In a heartfelt statement, Mr. Zitouni's family said, "We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from the public, and very touched by all the kind words about Sam’s brave actions on the night of the attack." They added, "While we are really happy to have him home, he still has a significant recovery ahead, and we would now like to be left in privacy to care for him as a family."

An Outpouring of Support and Praise

Colleagues and passengers have widely praised Mr. Zitouni's conduct, crediting him with saving lives through his selfless actions during the terrifying ordeal. David Horne, Managing Director at LNER, had previously commended his employee, stating, "In a moment of crisis, Sam did not hesitate as he stepped forward to protect those around him. His actions were incredibly brave, and we are so proud of him."

LNER has reiterated its full support for Mr. Zitouni and its commitment to the safety and well-being of its staff. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Huntingdon incident.
