Passengers planning train journeys over the festive season are being warned of widespread disruption, with a major 32-day rail shutdown set to impact more than 2,500 services across the UK. The extensive engineering programme, costing £130 million, will see some journey times treble as Network Rail carries out vital upgrades and maintenance.
Major Stations Face Festive Closure
Network Rail has drafted in more than 20,000 workers to deliver what it describes as 'vital improvements and routine maintenance' that 'will give you a better and more reliable railway for the long term'. Mark Goodall, Wessex route director, speaking on behalf of Network Rail and South Western Railway, offered an early warning to passengers. 'We are advising passengers to plan ahead and use alternative routes into the capital,' he said, while apologising for the inevitable disruption.
