The 2026 London Marathon kicks off this Sunday, April 26, and if you want to follow a friend or family member as they tackle the 26.2-mile course, we have all the details you need. Whether you prefer the official app, TV broadcasts, or live tracking online, there are multiple ways to stay updated on their progress.
When Does the Race Start?
The race features staggered start times to prevent congestion among nearly 60,000 participants. The elite wheelchair race begins at 8:30 AM, followed by elite women at 9:05 AM and elite men at 9:35 AM. Mass participation waves start from 9:35 AM and continue until 11:30 AM, with runners grouped by estimated finish times.
Best Way to Track a Runner
The most reliable method is the TCS London Marathon App. You can add a runner's name or bib number to your tracking list, and you will receive updates every 5 kilometers. If the runner enables GPS tracking, you can get near-live updates, allowing you to follow their exact location. The app's Wayfinder feature even predicts when they will pass specific landmarks along the route.
Alternative Tracking Options
- Use the marathon's official website with the runner's name or bib number.
- Monitor third-party apps like Strava if the runner shares their activity.
- Ensure you have the runner's bib number for accurate tracking.
How to Cheer Someone On from Afar
The TCS app includes a Belief Booster feature that lets you send messages displayed on screens along the course. If your runner is struggling, they may see your encouraging words at a crucial moment.
TV Coverage
The marathon will be broadcast on BBC One from 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM, then on BBC Two from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM. BBC iPlayer will also host live streams of Tower Bridge from 10:30 AM and the finish line from 12:30 PM, though spotting your runner in the crowd may require sharp eyes.
How to View Results
Results are updated on the marathon's app and website, as well as on sites like Marathon Guide and Run Through. You can check these to see your runner's official time and splits.
