Designs for a major transformation of London's historic Fleet Street have been unveiled, promising a greener and more pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare. The City of London Corporation has presented two options for the iconic road, which was once the capital's printing and publishing hub, aiming to accommodate an expected daily increase of 40,000 people due to nearby developments.
Two Design Options for Fleet Street
Both proposals include wider pavements, additional seating, and more greenery. The first option emphasizes Fleet Street as a destination, with significant changes to road traffic, wider pavements, and more plants and relaxation areas. The second option maintains current traffic levels while still adding new plants and seating, offering a more gradual transformation.
Alderwoman Martha Grekos, Chair of the Fleet Street Area Working Group, commented: 'Fleet Street is one of London’s most iconic and historic streets, and this project gives us a unique opportunity to reimagine it for the future. The design options reflect valuable input from local businesses, residents, and stakeholders, and demonstrate our ambition to create a greener, safer, and more welcoming environment for everyone.'
Public Consultation Open Until July 27, 2026
The City of London Corporation is seeking public feedback on the two designs. Residents, businesses, and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the consultation, which is open until July 27, 2026. The final design will aim to balance the needs of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists while enhancing the street's historic character.
This overhaul is part of broader efforts to improve connectivity and sustainability in central London, aligning with the city's goals for reduced emissions and increased green spaces.
