Oxford Street has officially been pedestrianised. Cars, bikes and buses can no longer travel along a one-kilometre stretch of road between Great Portland Street and Orchard Street.
The Mayor of London, Lord Sadiq Khan, first announced proposals to make part of Oxford Street vehicle-free in 2024. His plans may have proved controversial but, despite disagreements, they have officially come to fruition as of today (Monday, October 26).
How the pedestrianisation is being implemented
The transformation began over the weekend, with bus routes changed and cars diverted away from the car-free area from Sunday evening. Barriers are now in place at both Great Portland Street and Orchard Street.
On the west side, the pedestrianised zone begins just before Selfridges, continuing up to Urban Outfitters on the east side. Both Bond Street and Oxford Circus Tube stations are located within the traffic-free area.
