A21 speed limit could be cut to 20mph in Bromley, Lewisham

Transport for London (TfL) has proposed reducing the speed limit on the A21 Bromley Road/Bromley Hill from 30mph to 20mph for almost its entire length. The road, which runs from Catford towards Bromley North, would see the lower limit applied between its junction with Sangley Road and its junction with Avondale Road, according to a new traffic order.

Proposed changes and affected areas

The permanent speed limit reduction would also affect surrounding side roads within the area, although the traffic order does not specify which ones. The proposals are part of a TfL initiative to lower speed limits on major routes through the boroughs.

Residents and road users can view the full proposals on TfL's website. Feedback is open until November 10, and all objections and representations must be made in writing to Transport for London, Streets Traffic Order Team, Palestra, 197 Blackfriars Road, London, SE1 8NJ, or via email to trafficorderssection@tfl.gov.uk, quoting reference NP/REGULATION/STOT/DW/TRO, GLA/2026/0683.

How to respond and stay informed

The consultation is part of TfL's broader efforts to improve road safety on key arterial routes. The A21 is a significant thoroughfare connecting Bromley and Lewisham, and the change would affect daily commuters and local residents alike.

For those wanting to track planning applications, alcohol licensing applications, or planned road closures nearby, the Public Notice Portal, owned by the News Media Association, provides access to statutory public notices. The portal is supported by the Google News Initiative and carries notices published in local newspapers, with NMA members including nearly 900 local and regional titles reaching 40 million people monthly.

The final decision on the speed limit will follow the consultation period, with TfL expected to consider all feedback before implementing any changes.
