Residents living near a KFC branch in New Malden have raised objections to the fast-food chain's proposal to extend its opening hours, warning of increased noise and litter. The branch on New Malden High Street has applied to stay open until midnight from Sunday to Thursday and until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. Customers would not be allowed into the venue after midnight, when it would switch to delivery only.
Residents voice concerns over noise and litter
Chris Moore, representing Sussex Close Residents Management Ltd, which comprises 17 properties, told Kingston Council's licensing hearing on Tuesday (July 7) that the extended hours would “invariably mean more customers, delivery riders and increased levels of activity - exacerbating the noise and disturbance to residents.” He noted that while the bin area behind the store had been kept tidy recently, it had previously been left “disgusting,” and longer hours would lead to more litter. However, he acknowledged that not all litter could be attributed to KFC customers.
Mr Moore added: “The proposal is out of keeping with the surrounding area. New Malden High Street and its environs are not a late-night entertainment spot.”
Seven objections filed ahead of hearing
The application received seven written objections before the meeting. One objector stated that residents already face “problems from youths and noisy customers” leaving the branch, and that later opening would encourage more customers to “hang around” their street late at night “or pass through making noise, depriving people of their sleep.” No objections were raised by responsible authorities.
Solicitor Matthew Phipps, representing KFC, argued that there had been no formal complaints about the branch, which he said was well-run. He stated that conditions attached to the licence would address potential issues, including littering, and that residents could request a review if concerns persisted. Mr Phipps described the extended hours as reasonable and earlier than policy guidelines, which allow venues in the area to stay open until 2am.
Mr Phipps added: “I’m not in any position to challenge that there may have been some disappointments in the past, and if that’s true I can only apologise for and on behalf of the business, but that doesn’t allow for the conclusion that the application should be refused.”
Council decision pending
The council's decision on the application is expected to be published in the coming days.
