London Bus Strikes to Disrupt Seven Key Routes in East London

Major bus services in east London are set to be severely disrupted by industrial action this weekend, with a series of strikes planned for April and May 2026. The strikes, involving 300 drivers represented by the Unite union, will impact seven bus routes, causing significant inconvenience for commuters and residents relying on public transport in the area.

Strike Dates and Affected Routes

The industrial action is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 17, 2026, with additional walk-outs planned for Fridays April 24 and May 15. Transport for London (TfL) has warned that services will be affected from 5am on each strike day until 5am the following Saturday. The following bus routes are expected to be impacted:

  • Route 8
  • Route 25
  • Route 205
  • Route 425
  • Night Route N8
  • Night Route N25
  • Night Route N205

However, TfL anticipates that routes 25 and 425 will operate a near normal service for most of the strike periods, offering some relief to passengers. These disruptions follow a previous four-day strike from March 19-22, 2026, highlighting the ongoing nature of the dispute.

Causes of the Industrial Action

The strikes stem from a dispute between Unite and the East London Bus & Coach Company, a subsidiary of Stagecoach. Unite alleges that drivers at the Bow garage are experiencing fatigue due to long-distance shifts without adequate breaks, which not only affects their well-being but also increases the risk of accidents. Sharon Graham, Unite general secretary, stated, Stagecoach is behaving appallingly, overworking drivers, creating a huge issue of fatigue and not giving them essential breaks. Fatigue is not just everyday tiredness, it is highly dangerous for both drivers and the general public.

In response, a Stagecoach spokesperson told the BBC that the company has been engaged in detailed discussions with Unite for many months and emphasized that drivers are encouraged to report if they are not safe to drive, without financial penalty. TfL has expressed regret for the disruption and urged both parties to find a resolution swiftly.

Broader Transport Context

These bus strikes coincide with planned industrial action on the London Underground, set to begin next week and continue through April, May, and June 2026. This dual disruption underscores broader tensions in London's transport sector, potentially leading to widespread commuting challenges across the capital. Passengers are advised to plan alternative travel arrangements and stay updated on service announcements during the strike periods.
