In a major expansion move, budget airline Jet2 has confirmed it will begin operating flights from London Gatwick Airport for the first time ever. The announcement marks a significant strategic shift for the carrier, which has enjoyed a successful year bolstered by a viral marketing campaign and a recent accolade naming it the UK's most reliable airline.
A 'Game-Changer' for Holidaymakers
Jet2 CEO Steve Heapy described the move as a 'game-changer' for customers and a 'once in a generation opportunity' to accelerate the company's growth. He revealed that establishing a base at the Sussex hub had been a long-held ambition for the airline. Gatwick is the second-largest airport in both London and the UK, and is already a key base for low-cost rivals like Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air.
An aviation expert told the Independent that this increased competition at Gatwick is great news for consumers, who can expect to benefit from lower prices and improved flight times as a direct result.
Routes, Jobs, and Expansion Plans
The new operation is scheduled to commence in March 2025, perfectly timed for the Easter holiday rush. Jet2 will base six aircraft at Gatwick, made possible by the airport's release of additional capacity.
Travellers will have a choice of 29 'sunshine destinations' across Europe. While most routes will operate once or twice weekly, the popular spots of Majorca and Faro will be best served with 10 flights per week. One-way fares on some routes will start from an incredibly low £26.
This expansion is more than just new holiday options; it's also a boost for the local economy. The airline estimates that the new Gatwick base will create nearly 300 new jobs, including roles for cabin crew, pilots, engineers, and ground staff.
Part of a Broader London Airport Upgrade
Jet2's arrival at Gatwick is part of a wider wave of investment and expansion sweeping across London's major airports. Gatwick itself has controversial plans to add an extra runway before 2030.
Meanwhile, other airports are also undergoing massive transformations. Heathrow is set for a £49 billion extension, Stansted is in the midst of a £1 billion makeover to increase visitor numbers, and Luton Airport is preparing to open a brand new terminal. Within a few years, London's air travel infrastructure will be substantially larger and more modern.
