Major Contactless Payment Expansion at London Airports to Transform Travel Experience
A transformative update has been implemented at two key airports near London, promising to make travelling significantly easier for millions of passengers each year. London Southend Airport and London Stansted Airport have integrated contactless payment technology into their rail services, marking a substantial enhancement in passenger convenience.
Network-Wide Rollout Across Essex and Hertfordshire Stations
This development is part of Greater Anglia's ambitious expansion, which now encompasses 20 additional stations across its network. The rollout, which commenced on Sunday, March 8, includes the airports at Southend and Stansted, as well as the newly opened Beaulieu Park station in Chelmsford. Passengers travelling between London Liverpool Street and various stations throughout Essex and Hertfordshire can now simply tap in and out using a contactless bank card, smartphone, or smart device.
The integration ensures that travellers on crucial commuter and airport services, including the Stansted Express route, will benefit from a more straightforward journey. Contactless payment technology allows passengers to pay for single journeys, with fares automatically calculated based on destination and travel time, merging peak and off-peak tariffs where applicable. Daily and weekly fare caps are also in effect for journeys into and within London.

Passenger Traffic and Airport Significance
Recent data from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) highlights the importance of these airports. Between April 2024 and March 2025, over 231,000 entries and exits were recorded at Southend Airport railway station, an increase from approximately 188,000 the previous year, though still below the peak of 757,000 recorded between April 2019 and March 2020.
Meanwhile, Stansted Airport boasts Essex's busiest railway station, with ORR figures showing more than 10 million entries and exits during the same period. This underscores the massive impact the contactless payment rollout could have on passenger flow and efficiency.
Leadership Perspectives on the Enhancement
Martin Beable, Managing Director at Greater Anglia, described the change as making travel with the operator "even easier and more convenient." Gareth Powell, London Stansted's Managing Director, hailed it as "great news for passengers" that would make journeys "even more seamless."
Caroline Fitzgerald, London Southend Airport Commercial Director, commented: "Rail connectivity is a key part of our offer as an easy, speedy, friendly major London airport, and this development makes choosing London Southend an obvious decision for customers looking for a stress-free journey from door to departure gate. For passengers travelling from East London and further afield, contactless payment removes the need to queue for paper tickets – they can simply tap in and go."
Practical Advice for Travellers
Travellers are advised to verify contactless availability at both departure and arrival stations before setting off, and to ensure they tap in and out properly at the beginning and end of each trip. This precaution helps avoid any potential issues with fare calculation and ensures a smooth travel experience.
This significant update represents a major step forward in modernising travel infrastructure, potentially benefiting millions of passengers annually by reducing queues, simplifying payments, and enhancing overall journey convenience.
