Trump: O'Sullivan Withdrawals Forgotten by Fans

Judd Trump has offered his perspective on the frequent withdrawals of snooker legend Ronnie O'Sullivan, suggesting that while 'The Rocket' is a major draw for fans, his absence from tournaments is quickly forgotten as events unfold. O'Sullivan is currently competing at the German Masters in Berlin, marking his first appearance since a first-round exit at the UK Championship in December.

O'Sullivan's Inactivity and Form Struggles

Before his opening victory against Long Zehuang on Tuesday, O'Sullivan had not won a professional match since November 3, when he defeated Sanderson Lam in the International Championship. The 50-year-old also withdrew from the Masters earlier this month, but Trump believes this did not significantly impact the tournament's success.

'It's good for the crowd, it's good for his fans,' Trump said regarding O'Sullivan's participation in Germany, his first appearance at the event in nine years. 'I think when he's in an event it's great for the local fans that they get the chance to see him play. But I think as the rounds go on, like at the Masters, you forget sometimes that he was not even in it.'

Reputation Versus Current Form

O'Sullivan has not secured a ranking title since January 2024 or any tournament win since March 2024, largely due to inactivity and form issues. Despite this, he often remains a favourite with bookmakers, a status Trump attributes to his legendary reputation rather than recent performances.

'I don't know whose eyes that's in, to be second or third favourite. It's just the name isn't it really,' Trump remarked. 'I think on form he's obviously probably not second or third favourite, but I think the bookies are very weary of what Ronnie is going to turn up. I think he's always going to be an amazing player until he's 90 years old or whatever. He's always going to be unbelievable.'

Trump noted that O'Sullivan's reduced playtime affects his sharpness, but he remains a formidable opponent on his day. Both players are in the same half of the draw at the German Masters, potentially setting up a semi-final clash if they advance.

German Masters Progress

Trump secured a comfortable 5-0 win over Cheung Ka Wei on Tuesday, advancing to face Ryan Day next. O'Sullivan, showing signs of rustiness, managed a 5-1 victory over Long Zehuang and will now meet old rival Ali Carter in the last 32 on Wednesday evening.

Trump's comments highlight the complex dynamics of O'Sullivan's career, where his star power continues to attract attention, yet his sporadic participation leaves fans and competitors adapting quickly to his absences.
