Xabi Alonso has agreed in principle to become Chelsea's new head coach on a four-year contract, with an official announcement expected before the Premier League match against Tottenham on Tuesday. The former Real Madrid manager, who has been out of work since January, is Chelsea's preferred candidate to lead a rebuild after a turbulent campaign.
Talks Accelerate
Negotiations have intensified this week, and Chelsea are poised to confirm Alonso's appointment as their sixth permanent head coach since the BlueCo consortium takeover in 2022. The club suffered a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Saturday, capping a season marked by instability after Enzo Maresca's departure on New Year's Day and the subsequent firing of Liam Rosenior after just 106 days in charge.
Alonso's Pedigree
The former Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid midfielder is regarded as one of Europe's brightest young managers after leading Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2024. Despite a difficult short stint at Real Madrid, Alonso has been on Chelsea's radar for at least three years. The club's shortlist also included Filipe Luís, Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner, and Marco Silva.
Player Support
Alonso already has the backing of Chelsea's players, and his arrival is seen as a coup for the club, which has failed to qualify for the Champions League for the third time in four years. He is expected to have significant input into signings, with a focus on adding at least two experienced players this summer after years of targeting young talent.
Looking Ahead
Interim head coach Calum McFarlane will lead the team for the remainder of the season, with European football likely out of reach. However, Chelsea remain an attractive destination for ambitious managers. Alonso's move may clear the path for Crystal Palace to appoint Iraola, who is leaving Bournemouth at the end of the season, while Glasner is set to depart Palace after the Conference League final on 27 May.
