The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 on Tuesday night to complete a surprising sweep and advance to their third Stanley Cup Final in nine seasons. Mark Stone and Cole Smith scored for Vegas, while goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood made 24 saves to keep the Avalanche competitive.
Dominant Defense Stifles Avalanche
The Golden Knights suffocated Colorado's high-powered offense, holding them to just one shot in the final 14 minutes of the second period and limiting them to 20 shots overall. Carter Hart stopped 20 shots for Vegas, coming within 2:03 of his first playoff shutout in six years before Gabriel Landeskog broke the shutout.
"It's empty," Landeskog said of the loss. "It always is, whether you lose in seven, six, five or four games, it's an empty feeling. It sucks. There's no other way to put it."
Unexpected Run to the Final
The Golden Knights' journey to the Stanley Cup Final was far from expected. After winning the title in 2023, the team fired coach Bruce Cassidy with eight games left in the regular season and replaced him with John Tortorella. The move paid off as Vegas went 7-0-1 to close the regular season and then defeated Utah and Anaheim in the playoffs before sweeping Colorado.
"Now the real stuff starts," Tortorella said. "I consider the first three rounds playoffs. Now we're playing for the Stanley Cup."
Key Moments
- Stone opened the scoring on a lob pass from Brayden McNabb, catching the puck and going straight to the net.
- Smith tipped in Dylan Coghlan's shot from the point with 5:45 left for a critical two-goal lead.
- Blackwood made several dazzling saves, including a lunging glove stop on a power-play shot from Pavel Dorofeyev late in the second period.
Avalanche's Disappointment
Colorado, the Presidents' Trophy winners, had blown through the playoffs with an 8-1 record before meeting Vegas. Injuries to top players Cale Makar and Nathan MacKinnon hampered their efforts, but the Golden Knights also dealt with injuries, winning the first two games without Stone.
The Golden Knights will now await the winner of the Eastern Conference Final between Carolina and Montreal, with Carolina leading the series 2-1.
