USMNT's best World Cup and bitter disappointment at home

The United States men's national team delivered their best modern World Cup performance on home soil, but also let themselves down with a dismal knockout stage exit. They beat Paraguay 4-1 in their opener, the most impressive performance in the program's history, but lost 4-1 to Belgium in the last 16.

Christian Pulisic's mixed impact

Christian Pulisic, the golden boy, was largely absent physically or in influence except for 45 manic minutes at the start of the tournament. He appeared in endless commercials, outnumbered only by David Beckham. Pulisic hardly dislodged legends forged at the last World Cup in the US, who were decades overdue for displacement.

Teammates underperform

Weston McKennie, Tim Ream, Sergiño Dest, and others were below their personal par. This group proved to be the most talented and pedigreed generation the program has ever produced, but imploded in its first serious knockout test.

Window closing

The core is unlikely to improve by 2030: Antonee Robinson will be 32; Tyler Adams, Pulisic, and McKennie 31; Dest 29. The window hasn't closed, but the opportunity to break into the American mainstream has. The USMNT had a chance to be embraced permanently but faceplanted.

Trump interference

Donald Trump interfered to undo Folarin Balogun's suspension for the Belgium game, or at least claimed he did, a claim disputed by Fifa. The Belgians and the world dunked on the US when given the chance to equate the loss to a personal defeat for Trump.

Two truths

First, the USMNT let down the nation when 42 million TV viewers were dialed in – more than any college football or NBA finals game ever, and more than any baseball game this century. Second, they delivered the best World Cup performances in modern history, winning a single knockout game, just as in 2002.

Unprecedented performances

The commanding wins over Paraguay and Australia were unprecedented. In 2002, the US was fortunate to upset Portugal, lucky to draw South Korea, and rinsed by Poland. In 1994, 2010, 2014, and 2022, they hardly marched through the group stage. In 2026, they won the group with a game to spare for the first time.

Legacy

Real growth was demonstrated. The US bullied less talented teams (Paraguay, Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and matched up well with Turkey. Then it disintegrated when needed most. That's the legacy: soaring as high as hoped, then stalling and smashing a crater into how the campaign will be remembered.
