Denise Fox (Diane Parish) returns home from the hospital in EastEnders next week, but immediately faces a series of challenges. The beloved character has spent the past several weeks undergoing treatment for blood cancer, leaving her unaware of much of the drama unfolding in Walford.
Denise's return and hidden secret
During her absence, Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams) has been struggling to adapt to her son Jordan's new circumstances. The young boy is now in a wheelchair after being hit by a car driven by Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt). Matters grew even more complicated when Sheila, the grandmother of Jordan's father Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith), became a more prominent presence in their lives.
Next week, the Fox-Truemans prepare the house for Denise's return. However, as she arrives back, it becomes apparent that Denise is concealing a major development. She has been told that she has not responded to the treatment as doctors had hoped, meaning they need to try again. While keeping this secret, Denise struggles to settle back into family life.
Devastating news at the hospital
Denise then heads to the hospital, where she discovers that her friend has died. Devastated, she is supported by Libby Fox (Belinda Owusu) as they return home. Things go from bad to worse when Denise spots Jordan with Sheila. Curious, Denise learns that Sheila is Gray's nan. She insists on meeting Sheila properly, so Chelsea arranges a meeting.
When Sheila arrives, Denise asks Chelsea and Libby to leave. Determined, Denise interrogates Sheila about her motives. Towards the end of the week, Denise finally tells Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) that the chemotherapy is not working as hoped. She forbids Jack from telling the family and instead focuses her efforts on organising a leaving party for Libby.
