Kai Rooney and Jacey Carrick, the sons of Manchester United icons Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick, have signed scholarship contracts with the club. The ceremony took place at Old Trafford on Friday evening, with Wayne Rooney taking a break from his World Cup punditry duties to attend, while Michael Carrick was present both as the Manchester United manager and as Jacey's father.

The two teenagers were among eight young players who joined the Professional Development Phase group. The other six scholarship signings were Gazik Ibragimov, Edson Dejonge-Seiros, Harlem McLaughlin, Pharell Silvester, Connor Laurie, and Jaume Camacho. The annual scholars night marked the official start of their journey as full-time academy players.

Scholarship deals explained

Scholarship contracts allow young players to continue their education while pursuing a football career. Professional contracts become available when players turn 17. The academy's standout performer is 15-year-old JJ Gabriel, who is still too young for a scholarship deal, which he can sign at 16.

JJ Gabriel's remarkable achievements

JJ Gabriel has already made a significant impact, scoring 21 goals for the Under-18 side last season at just 15. He won both Manchester United's Young Player of the Season award and the Premier League's U18 Player of the Year. Speaking to MUTV, Gabriel said: 'I'd say [the Academy] helped me mature a lot. They help me to be very humble and keep my feet on the ground. I'm delighted to be working with him [Fletcher], he's an amazing coach and has helped me so much this season to become a better player and the best version of myself. My family have helped me a lot, through tough times and good times. They come to all my matches, no matter how far or close, and I love them to bits.'
