Turkey's World Cup Exit: Rebrand Needed After Goalless Drought

Turkey's World Cup journey ended in disappointment after two defeats without scoring a single goal, raising questions about whether the nation needs another rebrand following its 2022 change to Türkiye. The team suffered a 3-0 loss to Australia and a 2-0 defeat to Paraguay, the latter made more painful as Paraguay played with 10 men for over half the match after Miguel Almirón received a red card for covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent.

Rebranding and World Cup Woes

When Turkey officially changed its name to Türkiye in 2022, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated it was "the best representation and expression of the Turkish people's culture, civilisation, and values." However, Selim Koru of the Foreign Policy Research Institute explained that "the association with the bird genuinely annoys Erdoğan and the people around him." State broadcaster TRT also acknowledged that the Christmas turkey bird was a factor in the rebrand. Despite the name change, Turkey's World Cup record remains poor, with 2026 being only their third appearance at the finals since 2002, when they finished third.

Record-Breaking Goalless Streak

Turkey's attacking woes were historic. Against Paraguay, they registered 32 shots without scoring, adding to 30 fruitless attempts against Australia. According to tournament records, the combined 62 shots without a goal is the most in any two-match span in World Cup history. Teenage star Arda Güler, who along with Kenan Yildiz was expected to lead the team, said: "We should have won these games... everybody's sad, everybody's crying. We tried very hard but it didn't work. But we should have scored some goals."

Manager and Player Reactions

Italian manager Vincenzo Montella expressed shock at the early exit: "Somehow the ball didn't go in. It's really shocking to say goodbye to the World Cup after only two matches. Perhaps, even unconsciously, the pressure of playing in a major tournament after such a long absence affected us." The defeat to Paraguay was sealed by Matías Galarza's goal after just 65 seconds, the fastest in the tournament. Turkey dominated possession and chances but failed to convert, leaving fans and players devastated.

Fallout and Future Prospects

The elimination is expected to lead to significant changes within the Turkish football federation, though the exact fallout remains unclear. The question now is whether the rebrand to Türkiye needs a further revision to shed the negative connotations associated with the bird. As Football Daily noted, "Not everyone can enjoy the same generational reboot... But then our name isn't also a domesticated flightless bird as well as being a Cambridge English Dictionary's definition of both 'something that fails badly' and a 'silly person'." Turkey will have to wait another four years for another chance at World Cup glory.
