Thomas Tuchel has admitted England's defence needs significant improvement after they conceded two goals in a 2-2 draw with Ghana in their final World Cup warm-up match at Wembley. The German head coach, who took over in January, said the team's defensive organisation was "not good enough" and that individual errors cost them.

England took the lead through Jude Bellingham in the 19th minute, but Ghana equalised before half-time through a Mohammed Kudus strike. Harry Kane restored England's advantage early in the second half, but Ghana again levelled through a penalty from Andre Ayew after a clumsy challenge by John Stones. The draw means England have won just two of their last five matches under Tuchel, raising concerns ahead of the World Cup.
Tuchel made several changes at half-time, introducing Kyle Walker, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka, but the defence remained porous. Ghana had 12 shots to England's 14 and created several clear-cut chances. The visitors' pace on the counter-attack exposed England's high defensive line repeatedly.
Tuchel's assessment
Speaking after the match, Tuchel said: "We need to be more compact as a team. The goals we conceded were too easy. We have to improve our defensive structure quickly. The World Cup is in two weeks, and we cannot afford to give away such chances." He added that the team's attacking play was "encouraging" but stressed that defensive solidity is paramount in tournament football.
England's defensive record under Tuchel now stands at six goals conceded in five matches, with only one clean sheet. The team has struggled to replace the leadership of Harry Maguire, who was left out of the squad due to lack of game time at Manchester United. Tuchel has experimented with different centre-back pairings, but none have yet convinced.
World Cup readiness
England face a tough group stage in Qatar, with matches against Iran, the United States, and Scotland. Tuchel acknowledged that the draw with Ghana served as a "wake-up call" for his squad. He said: "We have to be ready from the first minute. There are no easy games at a World Cup. We need to show more resilience and discipline."
The German coach also highlighted the need for better communication at the back. "We have talented defenders, but they need to talk more and organise each other. It's about details, and we will work on them in the coming days," he said.
England's next match is their World Cup opener against Iran on November 21. Tuchel is expected to finalise his starting eleven after assessing player fitness in training this week.
