David James: Tuchel has bigger plans for Rashford, must start vs Panama
Tuchel has bigger plans for Rashford, says David James

Former England World Cup star David James has revealed in his exclusive column for Metro that he expects Thomas Tuchel to start Marcus Rashford in England's final group game against Panama, suggesting the manager has 'bigger plans' for the forward.

Low block challenges persist

James, who played for England at the World Cup, said he was not worried by England's 0-0 draw against Ghana midweek, describing it as a 'difficult game against a very organised defensive unit.' He dismissed concerns that England lack the players to break down deep-lying defences.

'Defending against the low block was something Thomas Tuchel spoke about after the game and we could face this again in the competition,' James wrote. He noted that Cape Verde could be a possible opponent in the round of 32 if England win the group, and they are known for a 'park the bus' approach.

Rashford's role and injury management

James expressed surprise that Rashford did not start against Ghana but suggested an injury concern may have been managed. 'I hope he gets to full fitness very quickly and I'm sure he will have opportunities,' James said. He noted that Rashford offered 'something a bit different' and 'more energy' when he came on as a substitute.

'If there was a concern over the injury flaring up, then he wouldn't be on the field at all,' James argued. 'That would be foolish from the staff and the player to put an injured or potentially injured player out there who could worsen that injury, so it is encouraging he's getting on the pitch, that suggests Thomas has bigger plans for him.'

Performance analysis: Ghana game

James analysed England's approach against Ghana, noting that Noni Madueke delivered many early crosses but no one got on the end of them. He questioned whether Madueke was doing the right thing or if teammates were failing to execute the plan.

'There were moments in the game that could have won it for England,' James said, pointing to Nico O'Reilly's header against the crossbar. 'On another day that goes in and we aren't worrying about low blocks.'

He added that the whole team, including Declan Rice, were 'caught in a position where no one had to over-excel' because they were not in danger of losing.

Possible changes against Panama

James predicted that Tuchel might not make wholesale changes in the final group game, as England need to better Ghana's result against Croatia to secure top spot. However, he said decisions could be based on player fitness rather than rotation.

'I wouldn't be surprised if Kobbie Mainoo gets his chance and I wouldn't be surprised if there are more changes on the defensive side of things,' James wrote.

England currently have four points from two games and are top of their group. A win against Panama would guarantee progression to the round of 32.
