Rick Harris has urged Thomas Tuchel to consider dropping Declan Rice for England's upcoming match against Argentina, citing the Arsenal midfielder's poor performance in the recent win over Norway. Harris believes Rice was a liability in midfield and cannot be carried against a strong Argentine side featuring Paredes, Fernandez, McAllister, and Messi.
Rice's illness may have affected performance
Harris acknowledged that Rice was reportedly ill prior to the Norway match, which may have contributed to his below-par display. However, he stressed that England cannot afford to have passengers in such a high-stakes game. 'Given how poor Declan Rice was against Norway, I think Tuchel has a huge call to make as to whether he starts the Arsenal player or not against Argentina,' Harris said.
Mainoo touted as ideal replacement
Harris suggested that Kobbie Mainoo would be an ideal replacement, highlighting the Manchester United youngster's ability to receive the ball in tight spaces under pressure and play forward. 'Kobbie Mainoo looks an ideal replacement to me as he is one of the few players we have capable of receiving the ball in tight spaces under pressure and looking to play forward,' Harris added. He drew comparisons to Messi, noting that while Mainoo is not at that level, he offers a unique skill set.
Rice's illness prior to the match raises hope that with a few more days of recovery, he could return to his normal level. Tuchel now faces a difficult decision ahead of the Argentina clash, balancing form, fitness, and tactical needs.
