Adel Taarabt, the former Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers winger, has become the latest ex-Spurs star to voice his concerns over the club's alarming situation this season. Speaking in an interview with Telecom Asia, Taarabt shared his thoughts on the struggles faced by Igor Tudor's side, who are currently embroiled in a tense relegation battle in the Premier League.
Tottenham's Precarious Position
Spurs find themselves in a precarious 16th place in the league table, sitting just one point above the relegation zone. This troubling position comes after a series of disappointing results under new manager Igor Tudor, who has seen his team suffer defeats to Arsenal, Fulham, and Crystal Palace in his first three matches in charge. These losses have been compounded by midweek action where Nottingham Forest held Manchester City to a draw and West Ham United secured a victory away at Craven Cottage, further tightening the pressure on Tottenham.
Taarabt's Candid Assessment
Taarabt, who first moved to the UK to join Tottenham from Lens in 2007, expressed his surprise at the club's current state. He remarked, "I mean, everyone watches the Premier League and it's strange to see where Spurs are at the moment. I have seen some games this season and I didn't think they played that badly, but then you also just get the feeling that something is not right." He added, "It's really surprising, but I guess that is football and the gap between teams is getting narrower and narrower."
During his time at Tottenham, Taarabt made only 15 appearances before transferring across London to QPR. His career also included stints at Fulham, AC Milan, and Benfica, and he currently plays for Sharjah in the UAE. His comments highlight the growing unease among former players and fans alike as the possibility of Championship football next season looms large if Tudor fails to turn the team's form around.
Bale's Previous Warnings
Taarabt's words of warning come just a week after another former Spurs winger, Gareth Bale, shared similar concerns. In an interview with The Overlap, Bale suggested that Tottenham must take significant financial gambles in future transfer windows to halt their ongoing slump. He stated, "You probably look at the wage bill, and it's lower [than rivals]. There's a reason for that. You can attract good players but now, you can buy a £50 million player and it's not what it used to be. You have to be spending £100 million now just to get a good player."
Bale also criticized the club's tendency to focus on younger players, saying, "They also always seem to buy young and hope they will grow into something big, it has worked in the past for example with me and a few other players. They are an established club now, they have the stadium, the training ground, the fan base. They need to be buying bigger players." This perspective underscores the broader issues facing Tottenham as they strive to compete at the highest level.
Looking Ahead
As Tottenham continues to navigate this challenging period, the insights from former players like Taarabt and Bale shed light on the internal and external pressures affecting the club. With the relegation battle intensifying, all eyes will be on Igor Tudor and his squad to see if they can rally and secure their Premier League status for another season. In other news, Tottenham is reportedly lining up a new managerial candidate, adding another layer of intrigue to the ongoing saga at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
