Southampton Football Club have confirmed the permanent appointment of Tonda Eckert as their first-team manager, handing the German a contract that will run until the summer of 2027.
Interim Success Secures Permanent Role
The decision comes after Eckert's highly successful interim spell in charge, which began last month following the dismissal of previous boss Will Still. The 32-year-old, who was previously the club's under-21 coach, has overseen a dramatic upturn in form, guiding the Saints to four victories in their last five Championship matches.
Speaking about his appointment, Eckert left no doubt about his ambition for the south coast club. "I think that we've had a great start and now it is up to us to continue," he stated. "We go all in; there is no other way. I don't shy away from saying that we want to play for promotion."
Technical Director Praises Clear Communication
The club's technical director, Johannes Spors, was effusive in his praise for the new manager, highlighting key attributes that convinced the hierarchy to make the move permanent. Spors emphasised that Eckert's "empathy for the playing group and the clarity with which he communicates his ideas" have been central to the team's rapid improvement since he took temporary charge.
While this marks Eckert's first role as a permanent first-team manager, he brings valuable experience from assistant manager positions at Barnsley and Italian side Genoa. His immediate task is to continue the team's momentum as they push for a playoff place.
Championship Promotion Push Begins
The Saints currently sit 14th in the Championship table with 24 points from 18 matches, placing them just five points adrift of the coveted playoff positions. Their first test under Eckert's permanent stewardship comes this Saturday with a home fixture against eighth-placed Birmingham City at St Mary's Stadium.
Eckert's appointment signals a clear intent from Southampton's board to build long-term stability and mount a serious challenge for an immediate return to the Premier League, with the young manager's philosophy and immediate impact deemed the perfect foundation for that push.
